About Spring Into Reading

Introduction

As proud participants in the Southampton Reading Charter Bronze Award 2025 programme, we are committed to creating an environment where reading is celebrated, supported and shared—both in school and at home.

We believe that reading opens doors—to imagination, learning, and opportunity. That’s why we have made a clear commitment to prioritise reading across the school day and beyond.

Through Spring Into Reading, we actively:

  • Celebrate reading across the school community
  • Create meaningful opportunities for children to read every day
  • Support families in building reading routines at home
  • Encourage children to see reading as enjoyable, not just educational

Supporting Early Reading & Phonics

For children learning to read, consistency and support are key.

We provide:

  • Weekly decodable books for children learning phonics
  • Structured support to help children build confidence step by step
  • Opportunities for children to practise reading both in school and at home

This ensures children are developing the skills they need while also enjoying the process.

Reading at Home: A Shared Experience

Reading doesn’t stop at the school gate. We encourage families to play an active role in every child’s reading journey.

Children are regularly sent home with:

  • A book to share and enjoy with their family
  • Opportunities to talk about stories together
  • Support to build positive reading habits at home

By working together, we can make reading a valued part of everyday life.

Creating Time to Read for Pleasure

One of the most important ways we support reading is by giving children time to enjoy it.

We prioritise:

  • Timetabled reading for pleasure during the school day
  • Relaxed, enjoyable reading experiences without pressure
  • Opportunities for children to choose books that interest them

Because when children enjoy reading, they read more—and that’s where real progress begins.

Encouraging a Love of Stories

Stories bring learning to life. They spark imagination, build vocabulary, and create shared experiences.

That’s why we:

  • Prioritise class story time every day
  • Share a wide range of books across all age groups
  • Encourage discussion, curiosity and imagination through stories

Inspiring Reading Beyond the Classroom

Our aim is to create enthusiastic, confident readers who continue reading outside of school.

We support this by:

  • Encouraging participation in summer reading challenges
  • Promoting reading as a fun and rewarding activity
  • Celebrating reading achievements across the school

Investing in Our Reading Spaces

The environment children read in matters.

We are committed to:

  • Creating welcoming and engaging reading spaces
  • Regularly investing in books and resources
  • Designing areas that inspire children to pick up a book

These spaces help turn reading into something children are drawn to, not something they feel they have to do.

Join Us on Our Reading Journey
